I was sitting by my laptop pondering what to write about and then I looked down at the video sitting on top of the laptop, “The
Business of Being Born.” I realized, for such an inspirational part of my birthing choices, I had yet to even write about the video. The Business of Being Born is a documentary about Birth in America. This documentary was the work of Rikki Lake and her colleague Abby Epstein and is a must-see for any pregnant woman or woman looking for a more empowering birthing experience for a second or third birth.
“The Business of Being Born” reveals the truth behind the U.S. hospital system when it comes to birthing your baby. The documentary focuses on helping women to understand that they have a choice in their childbirth and are not required to birth in a hospital bed lying on their back. Birth should be a very emotional experience for the mother, baby and father and should not be cluttered by the routine hospital procedures. The video describes these routine procedures as a way for the hospital to protect themselves from liability and to run a more efficient “business.” Hospitals, are ultimately wrapped up in the legality of birth which has lead them to loose touch with the reality of how the birthing process should function.
I am also very excited because I just won the “Your Best Birth: Know All Your Options, Discover the Natural Choices, and Take Back the Birth Experience” book from a contest hosted by The Greer Five which was written by Rikki Lake and abby Epstein after the filming of “The Business of Being Born.” I have not received the book yet, but I know that it is a book written to help women to understand that they have options to choose from in their birthing experience. If you are interested in the book or the video visit The Business of Being Born website. You can rent the video on the website for 24 hours to watch instantly on your computer for only $6.99. This is a must see, I watched it twice! Check it out!

I watched this on Netflix Watch Instantly and was surprised by my reaction. Both of my children have been induced (the first out of necessity b/c of gestational diabetes) and people have told me since that contractions with induction become so intense so quickly. I watched these water births and cried a little, the whole experience was so beautiful. I’m not sure what I’ll choose the next time around, but I’m certainly curious.
It makes you realize how beautiful the birth process can be when you take away all of the drugs and doctors. I had my son at a birth center, the night I had him it was jut me, my husband the nurse and the midwife in the whole place…a very nice way to bring someone into the world.
