Tracy, from Baby Blessings Natural Products was kind enough to offer to send me some of her cloth diapers to promote her site. She let me choose what type of diaper to try and since I’ve tried almost everything other than prefolds, I figured it’s time to give the prefolds a chance!

I have never used a prefold diaper, so I quickly googled “diaper folds.” I found some great pictures and easy instructions for 3 different folds. The folds are called ‘the newspaper fold’, ‘the reverse newspaper fold’ and ‘the twist fold’. I found ‘the reverse newspaper fold’ and ‘the twist fold’ to be the easiest and after several days of using the prefolds, I found that the twist worked best for me. To put the diaper on in a twist fold, you simply lay your baby on the flat diaper, twist the diaper once and fold down the front rise for the best fit and put on your snappi.

The twist fold seemed to provide the bulkiest coverage for my boy in the front, where he needs it the most. Not only does this fold provide great coverage, but it seemed to work best for the squirmy 15 month old who doesn’t have the patience for me to spend time folding and re-folding his diaper.

Along with 2 chinese prefolds, Tracy sent me 1 super brite cover and 1 snappi. The snappi was a really wonderful invention and a perfect easy alternative to diaper pins. To my surpise the snappi holds up very well to a toddler running all over the house! I think that the prefold diapers may be a bit scary at first, but onceyou give it a try they are a great, cheap alternative to a fitted or all in one diaper. The prefolds are just $3.50 a piece and the cover just $12.50, can be used for multiple changes.

Fresh, clean, like new…is this how you describe your cloth diapers when you take them out of the laundry? Stephanie, the creator of The Eli Monster was kind enough to share with me a little more about her shop:

How long has your shop been open?

Since November of 2007.

Is your shop a hobby or a career?

The Eli Monster is a nice hybrid between hobby and career. I love that I have the freedom to slow things down when I need more time with my family and speed things up when we need them to. Just recently it turned into our family’s sole income so we’re definitely ready to take the business to the next level and make it a full time career for both Tony and I.

How did you get started?

I started making cloth diapers for Eli before he was born. I just knew that that was something I was committed to. When I started my diaper search I realized that it was mainly bunnies and dancing teddy bears. We are NOT a bunnies and dancing teddy bears family so using some skills I learning in college (gotta love all art electives) I started silkscreening and playing with different color combos in his diapers. I showed them to some friends and everyone loved them and suggested I try selling them. The rest is history!

Do you sell your products elsewhere?

I have my diapers in a few small stores around the globe and I also sell on our own website-TheEliMonster.com. Each venue has its pluses and minuses. I love that customers can touch and feel the physical product in the stores, I love the freedom to present my online shop however I feel in my own website and I love the exposure that etsy provides.

What are the products you sell?

I sell all types of cloth diapers, accessories for cloth diapering and cloth diaper (and disposable diaper) friendly baby and toddler clothing.

What is the most popular item you sell?

My All In One (AIO) type of diaper is, by far, my most popular seller. It’s the easiest to use and is very daddy friendly. You put it on just like a disposable but you wash it instead of throwing it away. And, in my opinion, are just so stinkin’ cute! (THIS IS THE ONE SHE SENT ME!)

What makes your shop unique?

Our shop strays from the cutesy cutesy diapers normally seen from other diaper companies. Eli loves “pirate ships” (aka skulls and jolly rogers) so we try to cater towards that aesthetic. We also love combining different materials and techniques into a single project. A popular design, the Speedypants, utilizes ribbons, silkscreening and decorative stitching all into one diaper.

What do you love about what you do?

I love that I’m helping promote cloth diapering. We proudly support organizations like Miracle Diapers and Teeny Greenies who lend cloth diapers to families in need. But I really love the freedom to stay home with my son (and future daughter). I never missed a milestone and I feel like our family is closer because I get to stay home. I get the best of both worlds. It’s my perfect mix between June Cleaver and a high powered executive.

How do you market your products?

I think that marketing is just as important as making a great product. I use a lot of viral marketing to promote The Eli Monster. Some of my sites:

This Black Friday, I took advantage of the holiday sale at Sloomb to buy one of their fitted snapping organic bamboo cloth diapers. I was so excited to get this diaper in the mail, I love the cute colored diapers and the soft organic bamboo-cotton blend fabric. Sloomb really offers the best in sustainable cloth diapering options. Their sustainablebabyish line includes fitted diapers, flat diapers, boosters, wool covers and wool longies. No PUL covers sold there! As an added bonus for each diaper you purchase a tree is planted in Southeast Asia.

I picked the green medium fitted diaper not only because it’s adorable, but I’m sure to be able to use it again with another baby, no matter the sex. When I received the diaper I was surprised to see the insert snapped in the front of the diaper, rather than the back, where I have seen it on other diaper designs. I immediately thought, wow, this is a good idea! I know that the front of the diaper is always the most wet for my baby boy, and this really helps keep him dryer longer. With this design he is ensured to have the insert stay in position and not slip too far back, causing leaking. The diaper also comes with a doubler insert that is a similar size to the snap-in inserts.

After washing the diaper, I was excited to try it out on my son to check out the fit. This diaper is trim and not too bulky and I love the fit! The coverage is enough to hold in any mess and small enough to fit comfortably under a wool cover or longies. With the thickness of the diaper I would also love to let my baby run around with out a cover on on those “diaper-only days.”

Since I loved this diaper, I thought I must share my thoughts with my readers. I contacted Erin from Sloomb and let her know that I would be writing a review of the diaper on my website and I would love it if she would like to offer a giveaway. I guess it was my lucky day, she wrote me back saying that she would not only like to participate in a giveaway, but she would like to send me one of their new double layer wool knit diaper covers to review as well!

The wool knit cover comes in a soft gray wool and arrived at my doorstep in only 2 short days. I immediately opened the package (which was very minimal) and pulled out the softest wool I have ever felt. The cover is even softer that the merino wool fabric I have made my own covers out of. You will be amazed by its silky smooth feel! I can only imagine that my son will feel so comfortable wearing this cover that is not only warm, but very breathable.

I sent an e-mail to Erin thanking her for the cover and let her know that I would be giving it a try once I lanolized it. She quickly responded saying that it can be used for the first time with no need to lanolize. This was even better, no waiting for 1.5-2 days for the cover to dry, I could try it right away.

I love wool, I am always telling people, since I discovered it, that it is the “magic material.” I am amazed everytime I put a wool cover on my baby that he stayes so dry! I am even amazed that the wool puddle pad on my son’s mattress, which has been peed on, does not leak through to the mattress. It really is an amazing material. It makes me wish I had most of my clothing made of wool. The quality of wool material really makes the difference, the material should be no more than wool/lycra added for stretch for a soft, no itch feel.

Introduce yourself.  What is your shop name/url?

My name is Victoria Drake and I live in Salisbury, MD.  I have two beautiful children and a wonderful husband.  My etsy shop is K & K’s Chubby Cheeks you can find it at www.kandkschubbycheeks.etsy.com

How long has your shop been open on Etsy?

I opened my Etsy shop in October of 2009.  I am very new to etsy and excited to get my name out there and provide mothers and babies with quality products.

Is your Etsy shop a hobby or a career?

My Etsy is a career.  I started sewing cloth diapers as a hobby, then my husband convinced me that I should try to sell my diapers because they are just so darn cute.  So I guess you can say that my shop is both a hobby and career.  I love what I do.

How did you get started?

I started sewing when I was a child.  When I started cloth diapering I found that no diaper fit all of my criteria.  So I figured I would create my own with all the features that I love.  I wanted a fitted diaper with wonderful and cute prints, that was also organic and VERY absorbent.  So I began sewing and perfecting my diapers.

Do you sell your product(s) elsewhere? If so, where?

I have diapers in a local green baby store (Go Green Baby)  as well as on their website (gogreenbabyshop.com)and I also do customs for those who contact me.  I love doing customs and working with mothers to create the perfect diaper.

Do you feel that Etsy has provided you with a supportive community to sell your products?

Etsy has provided me with a great community.  I am a member of the Etsy Cloth Diaper Team.  This group gives great support and advice to be successful in your business.

What is/are the product(s) that you sell?

Currently I sell fleece soakers, training pants, one-size diapers, newborn diapers, and sized flannel fitteds.  I will soon be including wipes, bibs, burp cloths, and mama cloth.

What is the most popular item that you sell?

So far I have been contacted the most about night diapers.  Moms are looking for fitteds that will last them all night.  My night fitteds have a cotton knit outer, organic bamboo fleece/organic cotton fleece hidden layer, and bamboo velour inner.  They also include 3 soakers (two large soakers, and one small) and a snap down rise.

What materials do you use to create your product(s)?

I use 100% cotton knit prints, organic bamboo fleece or organic cotton fleece, organic bamboo velour, KAM snaps, and Maxi Lock thread.  All of my diapers are turned and topstiched for comfort and durability.

Do you create your product(s) with the environment in mind?

I do create my products with the environment in mind.  I use organic materials and try to create a diaper that cleans well and dries fast to help save on energy and time.

What makes your shop unique?

I think what makes me shop unique is that I am trying to provide quality products at an affordable price.  So many times you see cute fitted diapers that cost a lot of money.  I wanted to be able to provide absorbency and squishy goodness with it breaking the wallet.

What do you love about what you do?

I love that I can create such cute diapers, I love to sew, and I love seeing cute babies in the “Chubby Cheeks”.  And I love that I can help my husband provide for our family

How do you market your products?

Why do you make and sell products through Etsy?

I make and sell products through Etsy because people are specifically looking for quality handmade items and I think that Etsy is the perfect place to find them.  There are many women on Etsy who make wonderful diapers.

To kick off the start to my Etsy Shop Feature Month I have reviewed the CushytOOsh cloth diaper.  The CushytOOsh Diaper shop is an Etsy shop run by a mom, Susie!

Susie has recently redesigned the CushytOOsh diaper to withstand all wetness.  This diaper has a thick, soft and absorbent sherpa cotton layer and hemp layer soaker pad.  Susie invented the cradle in her diaper, not only to hold the soaker pad, but to lock wetness in the diaper.  The gussetts make up the cradle, which holds the insert with the PUL on each side providing leakproof barriers.The diapers are purposely sewn for overnight use, giving both the baby and the parents the ability to sleep through and wake up to dry clothing and sheets.

I personally have tested this diaper several times through the night and day time and we have had no leaking problems.  The diaper is also a nice fit with tough velcro tabs that have managed to stay on the wash tabs through the washing machine.

I know that for me a store like this is exactly what I would have loved to have had available to me when I was pregnant and registering for baby products.  I tried to register for only organic and eco-friendly products from Babies ‘R’ Us and Target, but it was tough to pick from only a select few items offered in those stores.  With a store like Franklin Goose, I could have not only had a wide variety of amy eco-friendly products to register for, but it is also a simple way of letting your family and friends who are buying for you know that you are interested in only eco-friendly products.

Franklin Goose is you one-stop shop for all your baby needs.  They offer everything from cloth diapers to baby furniture and everything in between.  If you are a pregnant, soon to be mommy, you will love their registry.  The registry and the website are both very easy to navigate, so your guests would love shopping at Franklin Goose as well.

Sheri was kind enough to send me one of their products to test out!  She sent me the small Wheely Bee .  This rideable bee was built on a plywood base made of renewable plantation timber, as well as being non-toxic and completely PVC free.  I was surprised how light and easy to move the Wheely Bee is.  My son has really loved this little toy since it came about a week ago.  He especially loves the “feelers” which wobble when he pulls them!  It also feels wonderful to know that a product like this can last a lifetime, rather than the plastic toys that break and crack within only a few months of purchasing them.

Nina, from Mountain Sky was kind enough to send me some of their wonderful products for a review.  Mountain Sky offers a variety of natural soaps and other products that are environmentally friendly.

CASTILE SOAP

The natural Castile Liquid soap is a ‘river friendly soap made with essential oils, vegetable oils and mountain spring water.  Castile soap is a concentrated soap that can be diluted with water for a variety of uses.’

Castile soap has many uses, in addition to washing your body, you can use it to wash laundry, make a household cleaner, carpet stains, dishes, put in kid’s tub water, hair, and pets.

To use in your laundry, simply add a few squirts to replace your laundry detergent (even great for cloth diapers!).

To make a cleaner, fill a spray bottle with one part water, one part vinegar, add 3-4 squirts of castile soap and some tea tree oil, this creates a wonderful all-purpose cleaner.

For carpet stains, use as a spot cleaner.

For dishes, place in dishwater for washing in the sink.

Castile soap can be used to replace almost any cleaner or soap that you have in your house, this is a great way to get those awful chemicals out of your house and out of your kid’s reach.  For some more information, check out these videos.

BAR SOAP

Lifefactory, the makers of Wee-go Glass baby bottles with the colorful silicone sleeve have recently launched their new multi-sensory teething ring.  Annie Jack of Lifefactory was kind enough to send me one of their new teething rings to give it a try.

The Lifefactory company has a commitment to environmentally friendly and health conscious products for children.  The products are created with readily recyclable materials as well as the use of low-impact dyes that contain no metals.  Background checks are done on the factories that manufacture their products to ensure that they meet ISO 9000 or 14000 standards.  Lifefactory also keeps packaging of their products to a minimum to cut-down on waste.  My teether came in a simple cardboard box, just the size of the teether and easily recyclable.

I love that the teething ring is the perfect size for my son’s tiny hands so he can hold onto it easily.  I also love that the ring can go in both the freezer and refrigerator.  I have one ring that contains water on the inside so it cannot go into the freezer because it could burst.  This ring is also safe in the fact that their is not a chemical liquid on the inside of the ring.  The fun bumps/shapes on the ring make it interesting for baby to touch, while also helping to sooth their gums.
