As a member and aspiring leader of the Real Diaper Association, I have an obligation to spread the word about cloth
diapers. While at the Green Festival in DC on Sunday, I proudly wore my “Ask Me About Cloth Diapers Pin” on my shirt. While I did not have anyone question the pin during my duty at the trash cans, I figured I would have more luck if I walked around seeking out booths where mothers-to-be an new mothers would be found.
Once my shift ended I decided to go aisle by aisle looking for such booths. The first booth I found was Kiwi Industries. Kiwi Industries sells 100% organic clothing for children. While I was looking around at their merchandise a couple noticed my button! They were very excited to see that I was willing to answer any questions they had about cloth diapers. The couple told me that they had planned to use cloth diapers, but weren’t sure what to get. I briefly gave them a description of the diapers (pocket, all-in-one, etc.) and told them what I use and like. I also explained the washing routine and how easy it really is. At the end of our conversation I handed them a card I had printed up with my blog address and said if they had any more questions many of them could be answered by visiting this page.
I was excited to get to share my knowledge of cloth diapers with those who are interested, but I was disappointed that there was no other representation at the Green Festival. I saw so many mothers “wearing” their babies and many in strollers, I am sure that one of the great cloth diaper companies would have benefited from having a booth at the festival.
I did meet several other mothers who noticed my pin and asked why I was wearing it. These mothers were already cloth diaper users and I explained to them that I was a volunteer member at the real diaper association, an organization with a mission to spread the word about cloth diapers. They thanked me for what I was doing, which gave me the great feeling that I was making a difference.
Although people weren’t lining up to ask me questions about cloth diapers, if I helped one couple that day, that is enough of a reason to continue to spread the word. One baby more baby in cloth diapers mean thousands of less disposables that will enter our landfills!
