Cloth Diaper Breakthrough

by Rachel on February 8, 2010

Lets face it, Cotton Babies, the maker of BumGenius, makes a good diaper.  The reason I say this is because BumGenius makes up the majority of my stash and the stash of the other cloth diapering mommies I know!  For this reason I have faith that their new Flip diapers are going to be equally as popular, maybe even more so, since they are more afforable.

Because I think that the Flip diaper is another quality Cotton Babies diaper, I have been recommending it to people on the fence about cloth diapering.  This diaper allows you not to make such a huge monetary commitment at $16.95/diaper with a stay-dry insert and for the more natural mommy, $19.95 for the organic cotton insert option.  Not only is it a cheaper diaper, but since it’s a shell cover, you can buy fewer shells than inserts to save you even more cash.  The PUL cover can be wiped clean in between diaper changes and you’ll be ready to put a new insert in and baby is clean as new!  These easy lay-in inserts require no stuffing, so easy dad can do it!  Finally, for those trips with baby, Flip sells a disposable liner that will allow you to continue using your PUL shell on the road.

Well, one of my good friend’s just called me to let me know she’s decided to make the switch!!!!!  I’ve been pitching the diaper to her and sending her fellow blogger reviews of the diaper for a while and she’s finally making the commitment.  She’s been convinced that her almost 6 month old son is perfect for these diapers now that he won’t need a sized diaper as he may have as a newborn.  The Flip diaper is one-size and will last him for as long as he’s in diapers.  Her husband, still skeptical of the switch, asked her to create a spreadsheet showing the money savings :)  I think that’s what really made her give the diapers a second thought.  She’d really like to save $$.  Hey, if that’s your reason for cloth diapering, more power to you!  But, I can say for sure, without a spreadsheet, that the Flip diapers will save you money!

Have you tried Flip diapers?  Do you think my friend will like them?  Any advice for her?

I bought a Flip when they first came out and I am, unfortunately, not thrilled with them. If it’s a dirty diaper, forget it – the whole thing is a mess and there is no re-using the cover. The insert does not stay put in a drawer or diaper bag, and thus is not daddy friendly for our family. The one thing I do like it the fit and the fact that it has snaps. I hope they figure out some improvements and manage to keep the price low.

The reasons I don’t like the Flip on my nearly 1 yr old boy:
The poo gets everywhere and everytime he’s poo’d in it the cover has gotten covered and needed washed (though never came OUT of the diaper, but his poo is pretty solid now, runny would be worse).
The PUL touches his skin and if it’s hot or he wets a lot it makes his skin a little bit red, and it just seems like it might chafe (sp?) a bit.
The insert slides around a bit.
    That being said…
I still like the Flip. I like the snap placement and stretchy tabs. I liked the colors and the way it fits. And mostly I like the inexpensive’ness. I only have one insert and I use it as soon as it comes out of the wash. I like the stay dry but haven’t tried the organic yet. After the insert is dirty I use my babykicks hemp prefolds trifolded in it, or my tickety bu bampoo velour prefolds trifolded. They both work quite well but I still don’t love that they slide around.
I hope they work well for your friend and she continues to cloth diaper! I’ve been trying to get every friend, family member, and occasionally a stranger, to cloth diaper. So great job in convincing her!
