Life without my diaper sprayer!

by Rachel on January 17, 2010

I love my diy diaper sprayer.  You don’t know how good you’ve had it until you have to live without it.  Since we’ve been in the solid poo stage of my son’s life we’ve had a diaper sprayer.  I followed the DIY diaper sprayer instructions on the gidgetgoeshome.com blog to make my very own diaper sprayer to attach to the toilet in our house.

Well, we’ve been camping out, to say the least at our rental property while we’re trying to sell our home.  We have no furniture, no TV, limited internet access (stolen from neighbors), and I can honestly say I am doing just fine without those amenities, but its not having my favorite diy diaper sprayer that is killing me!

I don’t know how you other cloth diapering mommies deal with the poo, but my diaper sprayer is my savior.  I remember reading a post on a blog a few months ago, where the woman was trying out a diaper sprayer for the first time and really didn’t like it.  She said it was much more messy than just dumping the poop into the toilet.  I responded that I loved my diaper sprayer and that I thought it was a much cleaner way of dealing with a poopy diaper.  I honestly hadn’t tried any other way, but now I can say I have!  I am really grossed out every time I have to deal with one of Connor’s dirty diapers.  I have to put the whole thing in the toilet and I can’t figure out a way to do it without getting the diaper so sopping wet that I need to drag the diaper pail over to the toilet so I don’t have to walk through the hall with a dripping wet diaper!  I think maybe some sort of scraper might help, but I envision that getting really gross.

I really hope our house sells soon, or I may have to go remove the diaper sprayer from the toilet there and hook it up here, wish me luck!

What do you do if you don’t use a diaper sprayer, do you think I can find a better way?

I don’t have a sprayer, while we were in the ‘only eating a few solids’ stage, I just used a tissue or square of toilet tissue and chunked most of it into the toilet. Now mostly it just rolls off in a, well, pile, and flush. I have an almost 15 month old who is slowly weaning. We’re thinking of installing a sprayer when we get our new house.

Yeah, his dirty diapers definitely don’t roll off into the toilet…if it were only that easy!

I have been using flushable liners for my son. Though we are looking at moving and the new house is older with septic not sewer so i may have to look in to something different. I am going to be checking out the site you listed to try to do our own sprayer.

We can’t use liners because our old house drains would get backed up, so I am getting a sprayer when our baby girl starts eating solids. I’m like you and cannot stomach the thought of dunking diapers in the toilet. I hope we can make our own using the DIY link you posted.

It was so easy to make the diaper sprayer, just make sure you go to Home Depot and get the same exact stuff in the pictures she posted…that’s what I did and it took me maybe 20 minutes to hook it all up!

Wow, I can imagine that would be rough!
Thanks for sharing the link to the DIY sprayer! I bookmarked it and will DEF do it that way when we have our next baby!

I swear by my diaper sprayer, I would be lost with out it. My son has food issues and we end up with many many diapers of runny toddler poo and with out the sprayer I would have left cloth they are so bad.

It is the best thing in my Cloth Diaper Stash so I can relate to you.

When I have had to go with out, vacation ect, I use linner in the diapers and that helps a little.

Have any ofyou thought of elimination communication aka natural infant hygine? I practice this with my two month old son and all his poo goes into the sink or toilet, while his diaper stays sparkling clean. It’s super easy! In my opinion I would rather do this than clean up a poopy diaper. :) . Just putting it out there :)

I have actually, my son is 18 months now and I’ve really been thinking that I’d like to start some part time ECing. Just this morning he pooped in the potty. I love the idea, but it’s hard with a busy work schedule.

    Hi there,
I am Jenna from Indonesia. We use this sprayer in the house, and i tell you that we are 95% muslims here, as i am, always use water and soap after doing this “business”. Beside having the sprayer, some people have bucket / pail / water pond and water scoop in the bathroom to be used after doing that “business”. We never ever use toilet paper. So, if you come to my country, you just need to bring your own little soap. Water is prepared in every public toilet here.
