Okay, so I have no idea why it has taken me so long to figure out swim diapers. We made it through swim lessons at 3 months old, summer at the beach and pool and now at 11 months I am just discovering how to use a swim diaper.
For my baby shower I registered for a swim diaper from Cotton Babies. I got a cute little yellow diaper. At 3 months old, when I signed us up for the “mommy and me” swim class I figured that this was like a bathing suit and should go over the diaper. I put it on over the diaper despite the fact that it was clearly trimmer than a bulky cloth diaper and was just for show!
Now that summer was around the corner I stocked up on some much cuter bathing suits, like little boy board shorts. At this point I had given up on our little yellow swim diaper and I spent the summer with my son in his cloth diaper with the cute suits on over top. Now the cloth diapers in the water are functional, but it means I have to waste a diaper getting it wet even if we are just going for a short dip. This may not seem like a big deal, but to a mother who is washing all of her sons diapers they are very precious when they are clean and dry ( I try to use them sparingly).
So, what you ask, took me so long to figure out how to use a swim diaper? Once again, with summer over we are enrolled in another “mommy and me” swim class. A friend of mine, who’s son is almost 3 months is also taking a swim class and just called me up the other day to tell me she’s ordering a cloth swim diaper. This prompted me to check out the diaper she is ordering to see what she found. When I visited the site, I Aha!, I figured it out, this is supposed to be worn right against baby’s skin with no extra diaper underneath!! It is silly to think that a cloth diaper, or even disposable diaper is necessary because it is not meant to keep them dry, but rather to keep the pool poop free. The diaper will still hold in solids and has no need for a soaker that will just fill with pool water.
I was so excited to find this out! In my swim class last night we tried it out, it was great, no sopping wet diaper to change after class. Now that my son is a big boy I just put the swim diaper under the cute board shorts bathing suits and he was set.
I can’t believe it took me 11months to figure this out.

What do you other cloth diapering mommies use in the pool?
