Last night as my husband and I were arguing over putting plastic tupperware in the microwave, I came across this article in my e-mail: “Can Green Disputes Kill a Couple?” I started reading out loud to him
as he said, “yes, they can!”
The article was perfect timing and gave us a chance to laugh a little about our silly argument. He reminded me how much he does because of my passion for “greener living.” Even if his effort is not as big as mine, he is making changes too.
He has slowly started to take small steps towards greener living, without my constant reminder. He will use reusable bags when shopping, buy organic food and brings his Klean Kanteen everywhere. Not only that, he hasn’t once complained about changing a dirty cloth diaper. He also went to every 3 hour Bradley class with me for 10 weeks straight. He reminded me of that last night, “Rachel, I’m a Bradley certified dad.” I laughed. He’s right, somehow he always is, he brings me back to reality sometimes. Even if he doesn’t always get coffee in a reusable mug, he is a green dad.
Being green takes baby steps, he brought up the point that I was not WAY into being green until I became pregnant. I have always cared about the environment, but not to the extreme that I do now. There is something about having a child that has made me want to not only teach my son what it means to be green, but I want to have a better planet for him to grow up on.
Do you have the “green fight” in your house? Who is the more eco-friendly member in your household?

My hubby and I just started last month on our green journey. I’m more actively green and he’s just going along with me, but he is going along with it, so that’s what’s important. You’re right though. Having a kid changes everything. I have never really cared much about the environment, but since having a kid it’s been one small green step after small green step…
We have moved past full blown fights to me just nagging when he uses ten papertowels instead of cloth. Being married to a vegetarian and the owner of an organic company he has conceded he can’ t win.
I have been green for a long time so most of the non-green things are gone from our house which alleviates opportunities for non-green decisions
Most of ours are gone from the house as well. We don’t buy paper towels or paper napkins anymore. I am constantly hearing that he has nothing to dry his hands on…guess I need to wash the dish towels more often. But all in all he’s come to accept those things.
A 3 hr. class for 10 weeks = good hubby!!
We’re out of paper towels right now and I really think we should try not buying them and see how we do. I do agree with you-they’re a waste!
