Top Organic Baby Food Choice

by Rachel on November 5, 2009

Let me start off by saying that I have never fed my son pre-packaged baby food.  I don’t believe that it is necessary to spend extra money on food for my son, when I can feed him what we already have in the house.  There are several reasons for this, 1- “I am cheap!”  (I got this from my father’s side of the family, but I think it is wonderful in this instance since my son is benefitting from fresh homemade food.) 2- I try to reduce my waste, all of the baby food companies manufacture their product in individual containers which creates a ton of waste.

Now, that being said, I understand that some mothers are busy and just don’t have the time or energy to cook their baby’s food.  A family member sent me an article from Greenopia, a newsletter that “provides consumers with high quality information to help them reduce their impact on the environment through their daily purchasing decisions.”  The article is “Greenopia Rates 10 Baby Food Brands for Sustainability.”  Ten baby food companies were compared for the sustainability of their foods, this includes, using organic foods and considering the packaging/manufacturing process of their foods.

Ten foods rated for sustainabilityTasty baby packagingYou can see from the list above that “Tasty Baby” won by a landslide.  Tasty Baby’s food is 100% organic food that is created with baby in mind.  This food is flash frozen, which is Tasty baby’s preservative.  There is no need for preservatives to be added to the food when the freezer provides that in a safe and healthy way.  This food comes in stages, stage 1, 2 and 3 to suit your baby’s needs.  It is also obvious by the image above that Tasty Baby takes thought and consideration into minimizing its impact on our environment with the packaging of their products.  It is important to support a company who not only supports organic farmers, but also cares about our earth.

Tasty Baby also has a great website with come cool recipe ideas using their frozen baby foods.  The recipe list is quite extensive, including drinks, smoothies, soups, snacks, muffins and deserts!  Heck, even if you don’t buy their food you can try out some of their great yummy recipes!  Mmmm, these recipies are making me hungry (I may have to try this second one for Thanksgiving), here are 2 that use their frozen pears:

Pear Vinaigrette

Cranberry Pear Relish

“Hi! OK so I’ve never used jar food til 3 weeks ago when I simply ran out of time to make her food and we were going out of town and she is the only baby of the 3 to love food so much she wants to eat all of the time!! So I got a value pack of Earth’s Best organic. It is jar food which we reuse or recycle the containers but do you have anything on the actual food itself and if it isn’t pure and organic as it says it is on the bottle?? Also, thanks for posting this so I can look into the other brand. I’ve never heard of it and I want her to have the best if momma can’t make it!!”

The Earth’s Best First Baby food line and their ingredients are as follows:

First Apples-Organically grown Apples and Ascorbic Acid(Vitamin C)

First Bananas-Organically grown Bananas, Water, Citric Acid and Ascorbic Acid(Vitamin C)

First Carrots-Organically grown Carrots and Water

First Pears-Organically grown Pears and Ascorbic Acid(Vitamin C)

First Peas-Organically grown Peas and Water

First Sweet Potatoes-Organically grown Sweet Potatoes and Ascorbic Acid(Vitamin C)

Ascorbic Acid is added to many fruits to boost the natural Vitamin C content of the fruit. It may also act as a preservative.

Your baby may however have a sensitivity to the acid. We are told to stay away from citrus fruits (such as oranges, pineapple, lemon et al) until baby is 10-12 months due mostly to the acidity of the fruit – diaper rash, skin rashes and tummy pains are some things that come from a sensitivity to citric acids.

“Yes I know well the digestive issues caused by cirtric acids and avoid them for them even after a year til mostly 18mos plus so will look into the foods we’ve been using to see if they are adding this in or not. I like the ones that are just the food and water.

As far as packaging goes, can you tell me what Greenopia’s issues are with glass jars of food especially if the consumer recycles or reuses the jars? Is there anything unsafe about them? Thanks.

Most other “organic” baby foods in the grocery stores use the plastic containers which I am NOT a fan of.”

Loved this post. I am right there with you. I linked to your post in my post from yesterday about managing the holidays. I’ve never bought a jar of baby food either, but if I did, I would certainly want to make the most responsible choice. Thanks so much for sharing! http://citybaby.posterous.com/we-all-deserve-a-happy-holiday
