Happy Eco-Halloween!

by Rachel on October 23, 2009

Each holiday that approaches is generally filled with decorations, parties, candy and food.  Halloween is no exception.  All of the candy, costumes, parties, food, goodies and decorations create a great burden on the resources of our planet.  While we should all have fun and enjoy the fun of halloween, it is also important that we remember to consider the environmental impacts.

I have a few tips to help “green” your halloween this year:

  • When considering a costume for your child this year, consider making one, or buying a handmade costume.  Another

great idea is to find a costume at your local consignment shop.  Many of the pre-made costumes sold in stores are made of petroleum-based plastic products, not exactly environmentally friendly!

  • For your holiday decorations consider using natural products such as gourds, pumpkins, corn, leaves and other wonderfully fall colored vegetables.  A wonderful idea I found was to carve out a hole in your vegetables or fruit with a candle carver (or knife) to create a beautiful candle decoration in your home.Candle Carver Also, be sure to only buy candles made from Soy and 100% beeswax instead of petroleum-based wax.
  • This Halloween, instead of passing out Snickers bars and Now-and-Laters, consider more eco-friendly and kid-friendly options.  A wonderful idea is caramel apples, chocolate dipped pretzels, or popcorn balls.  Not only will you avoid passing out high-fructose corn syrup treats, but you will save on all of the travel and unnecessary packaging required to bring you those treats to pass out.
  • When you are carving a pumpkin this year, save your pumpkin seeds and roast them with some salt and olive oil in the oven for a tasty treat!
  • If you are trying to think of a fun craft for the family, consider a felt wool seasonal craft.  Try the felted Corn Baby it will bBabyCornFelte a sweet addition to your Harvest Cornipopia display. The kit includes all the materials and instructions, including a felting needle, to complete this precious project. Try one and you’ll be making more on your own for fun and to give as gifts. Made in USA.
  • Lastly, remember if you are hosting your own Halloween party this year to use reusable or recycleable dish-ware for all of your guests!

Have a Happy “Green” Halloween this year!
